"It's not every day that you get asked to be a part of a record, and be a huge fan of the artist that asked you to do it. That's what happened to me with this record. I've been waiting for years for Shannon to do an album that features his voice, writing, and picking and it turned out to be just like I thought it would, Awesome! Not only do you get to hear one of the richest voices ever in Shannon, but you also get knocked out when you hear Heather sing. Her lead and harmony vocals add just the right thing to a song exactly where the song calls for it. It was huge honor to be a part of this recording. Give it a listen and you're sure to be as big a fan as I am."

The Working Man [3:15]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Shawn Lane – fiddle and tenor vocal / Heather Slaughter – bass / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Joey Cox – banjo. I had this melody for a couple of years and decided to pen an ode to the blue-collar person who packs that dinner bucket, goes to work every day, asks nothing of the federal government and wants to be left alone. What an amazing concept. Shawn Lane is one of my favorite tenor singers of ALL TIME and he blows this one away!!!

I've Hit Everything in My Life (But My Knees) [3:35]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Heather Slaughter – high baritone vocal / Shawn Lane – tenor vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Tracy Burcham – bass / Rob Ickes – dobro / Ron Stewart – fiddle. My buddy Mark Byrd gave me this line several years ago and suggested it might make a good song. Thanks to Dale Felts, I think it did; and it became my 3 minute autobiography.

Hooverville [3:17]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Heather Slaughter – bass / Shawn Lane – mandolin and tenor vocal / Joey Cox – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. My buddy Brink Brinkman and I finished this Depression – era song on Larry Stephenson’s bus at the festival in Bean Blossom, IN while I was filling in one weekend. I first studied “The Bonus Army” as a history teacher and wanted to tell its’ story someday. Thanks to Brink, we did. Again, Shawn sings it like he lived it and Joey really hammers the 5 on this tune!!!

You're My Music [3:32]
Heather Slaughter – mandolin intro, lead and harmony vocal / Shannon Slaughter– guitar, lead and harmony vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin back-up / Tracy Burcham – bass / Ron Stewart – fiddle. Co-written with my wife Heather, we played this song at our wedding. A friend of mine, when told I had a new love interest in my life from Alabama, asked me what I was going to do with my “music”. I thought about it for a second and replied “well …. She’s my music”. I called Heather that night and we finished the song in about 2 hours. Tracy’s innovative bass playing really augments the feel of this song!!

Leavin', Breakin' Even [3:02]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Shawn Lane – tenor vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Trevor Watson – banjo / Tracy Burcham – bass / Rob Ickes – dobro. A Tim Stafford, Bob Minner original song that really struck me when I heard the demo as a great melody and up-tempo song. Tim has long been one of my favorite guitarists and writers and I really wanted to do one of his songs. Bob is an awesome picker too. Thanks for the great tune guys!!!

Julie [3:28]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Heather Slaughter – bass and tenor vocal / Ron Inscore mandolin and baritone vocal / Joey Cox – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. Aaron Ramsey, of Mountain Heart, introduced me to this tune at a jam session at my home in Wilkesboro, NC several years ago. I altered the chord structure a bit but the core remains the same. Great groove on this Waylon Jennings original. He always did things his way, so I thought I would too. Ron’s fiddle break is killer!!

This Old Heart and Me [3:21]
Heather Slaughter – lead vocal / Shannon Slaughter - guitar and low tenor vocal / Shawn Lane – baritone vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Tracy Burcham – bass. My buddy, Dale Felts and I, had spent a weekend in “Nashvegas” and while driving back to NC on I-40 we pulled over at a rest stop and I got out the guitar. We had it finished before we got home. It was the first song he and I ever wrote. My wife Heather is an absolute awesome singer and this song really showcases that!!!

You've Been So Good to Me [2:43]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Lou Reid – tenor vocal / Barry Berrier – baritone vocal / Trevor Watson – banjo / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Tracy Burcham – bass / Ron Stewart – fiddle. After finishing my stint with the Lonesome River Band, I worked briefly with a group from the Shenandoah area of Virginia called Phoenix. Eddie King, Randy Driskell, David Coffey, and Jim Green have recorded several cd’s and this was one of my favorite tunes that they did. David wrote the song and he really captured my sentiment about God. He is SO GOOD!!!

I'll Ramble On [2:44]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar / Heather Slaughter – bass and tenor vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin and baritone vocal / Joey Cox – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. I wrote this song about 2 weeks before the first session of this record. Playing music for the last 20 years I’ve put a lot of miles under me and I’ve sort of been the drifter / dreamer type all of my life; so, if it weren’t for a day job and a wife, I’d probably have lived like the dude in this song.

Wilson County Line [2:48]
Shannon Slaughter – guitars and lead vocal / Heather Slaughter – all harmony vocals. Let me say that 3 of my favorite writers of ALL time are Tim Stafford, Craig Market, and Shawn Lane. Add Bobby Starnes to that list. It was a real honor for me to record this Stafford / Market / Starnes collaboration. No one writes like these guys and this is a “real” story about American life. Heather sounds like 3 angels on the harmony!

These Old Boots Brought Me Back to You [3:39]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Heather Slaughter – bass and high baritone vocal / Lou Reid – tenor vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Trevor Watson – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. Mark Harrell, an old college buddy, suggested this line to me about 15 years ago. I wrote it with a little different twist in mind during a professional development session as a high school teacher. Obviously, I wasn’t paying attention to the speaker that day.

It's A Long Way to Virginia [2:57]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal / Lou Reid – tenor vocal / Barry Berrier – baritone vocal / Tracy Burcham – bass / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Trevor Watson – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. This is another Phoenix tune that I love. I was fortunate enough to bring together two of my favorite singers on this one; Lou Reid and Barry Berrier. I’ve been a big fan of both of these guys for a long time and have had the pleasure of singing with them on the road. I’m so grateful they came in and sang on this record. They are two of the very best!!!

When the Grass Grows Over Me [3:33]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar, lead and tenor vocal / Heather Slaughter – bass / Lou Reid – high baritone vocal / Ron Stewart – fiddles / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Rob Ickes – dobro. I’ve always been a big fan of traditional country music and this song fits that bill. I heard the Osborne Brothers do this on their box set and loved it. I then sought out some old versions sung by George Jones and knew I had to do this song. It’s obscure but I hope it pays tribute to the way country music should be. Haggard, Jones, Whitley, Hank Jr., Watson, Street, Paycheck, Waylon, Willie, Conway, Buck and Don – that’s country to me!!! Ron’s twin fiddles and Rob’s dobro were outstanding on this tune!!

Mournful Tune [3:33]
Shannon Slaughter – guitar and lead vocal /Heather Slaughter – bass / Shawn Lane – tenor vocal / Ron Inscore – mandolin / Trevor Watson – banjo / Ron Stewart – fiddle. A bluegrass tune that Dale and I wrote during one of our “summits”. I always loved Blue Highway’s version of the Stanley Classic “Say Won’t You Be Mine”. The first line of that song includes a phrase about “night birds crying”. I wondered what crying night birds would sound like; I figure they’d be pretty mournful. Trevor’s banjo tuners and Ron’s mandolin break really made this song!!!
